Since the dawn of human history, we have discovered ways to ferment, distill, and consume substances that alter our consciousness. From ancient vineyards to modern celebrations, alcohol and chemical intoxicants have been woven into the fabric of daily life, gatherings, and coping mechanisms. Many of us grew up normalizing it, whether it was watching family members use a drink to wash away the trauma of war and the stresses of work or experimenting with peers during our teenage years.

Where society trains us to believe that relaxation and joy require a drink in hand, the Bible contains profound, unflinching warnings about the dangers of a compromised mind. For instance, King Solomon vividly describes the seductive and destructive nature of alcohol in Proverbs 23:31–32: “Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end, it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper.” In ancient times as well as today, the behavioral effects of heavy drinking destroy judgment, distort reality, and unravel relationships. Personal testimony echoes this truth: living under the influence of alcohol or chemical dependencies can ruin careers, fracture families, and sever the most important relationship of all, and that is our communion with God Almighty.

When the mind is foggy or chemically altered, spiritual vigilance completely collapses. The Apostle Peter issues repeated commands for believers to stay alert: “The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.” (1 Peter 4:7). Furthermore, 1 Peter 5:8 warns us: “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” An intoxicated or unsober mind is incapable of maintaining deep prayer, exercising spiritual discernment, or resisting the subtle traps of the adversary. A mind under the influence says things it does not mean, commits actions it would never otherwise consider, and slowly drifts away from the light into the shadows of darkness.

Choosing sobriety is not merely a lifestyle choice or a matter of health; it is a spiritual declaration. The Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:5–6: “You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.” True self-control comes from the grace of God, which teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions.

For anyone trapped in the suffocating jaws of addiction, there is profound hope and complete redemption. Just because you hit absolute rock bottom does not mean the end. If you trust in the Lord and have a sober mind, you will trust whatever is happening in your life and know it can be the starting point of miraculous healing. When you cry out in honest desperation, asking God to remove the chains of addiction, for instance, He answers with a healing touch that floods the spirit with peace and clarity. Walking through life with a fully sober mind, free from chemical crutches and spiritual fog, allows us to experience the pure, unadulterated joy of fellowship with our Creator. Life is immeasurably better when lived wide awake in the light of His grace.

So pray, pray to Lord Jesus; so many people are dealing with similar issues. For those addicted in the jaws of Satan, I ask You to intercede and break their chains. For those suffering with family members who are trapped in darkness, give them peace, strength, and friends in Jesus to comfort and encourage them. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
