I’ve read plenty of science fiction in my life. From epic battles, sleek starships, and ancient alien tech, but The Alien in You by James Davis did something different. It made me laugh, think, and question whether some part of me actually is…well, alien.
At first glance, this book is about a group of teenage street magicians from New York who travel between planets and solve problems using illusion and pattern recognition. Sounds wild, right? But what grabbed me wasn’t just the interstellar setting. It was how deeply human everything felt. I couldn’t stop grinning.
The narrative voice is fast-paced and full of humor. One minute you’re dealing with existential threats, the next you’re laughing about someone’s toe being painted like a tiny alien. The book dances on that line between absurdity and genius, and will keep you glued to your seats.
By the end of the book, I wasn’t just entertained. I was moved. There’s a section on belief-shifting that’s oddly profound. The characters confront their own biases—about aliens, about humanity, about what makes us “us.” And they do it not with lectures, but with jokes, props, and a lot of trial and error.
