A Scientific Case for God

Is it possible that science, the same discipline many believe undermines faith, could be leading us back to God?

And Then There Were Some: A Survival Mystery by Jay D. Clark questions one of the most ingrained presumptions of contemporary secularism: that theism and science are fundamentally at odds. He argues the opposite. Through the lens of scientific discoveries, Clark makes a compelling case that belief in a personal creator is reasonable and may be our best explanation.

One of the book’s central themes is the Big Bang theory, a concept that has revolutionized modern cosmology. Though widely accepted today, it was initially met with resistance. Why? Because it implied the universe had a beginning—a point where space, time, matter, and energy came into existence. As physicist Robert Dicke pointed out, a finite universe forced scientists to confront the uncomfortable possibility that the universe may have been created.

Clark explains that for many naturalists, an eternal universe was more philosophically appealing. It didn’t require explanation. It simply was. But the discovery of cosmic microwave background radiation in the 1960s confirmed the universe’s fiery origin, validating Georges Lemaître’s earlier work and even echoing the ideas of Edgar Allan Poe’s lesser-known cosmological poem Eureka. The evidence, ironically, forced reluctant scientists to acknowledge what religious texts had claimed for millennia: the universe had a beginning.

This is significant because beginnings demand causes. If the universe came into being, what caused it? Naturalism fails to provide a satisfactory answer. A cause outside time, space, matter, and energy is needed—something immaterial, timeless, and powerful. That sounds remarkably like the God described in Scripture.

Clark also explores Olbers’ paradox, which asks why the night sky is dark if the universe is infinite and eternal. The darkness, Clark notes, is further confirmation of a finite universe. It adds another clue to the growing evidence suggesting a beginning and a Beginner.

The resistance to this idea is philosophical. Sir Arthur Eddington once called the Big Bang theory “repugnant,” expressing a desire to find a loophole. But as more data emerged, those loopholes disappeared. Steady-state theories and oscillating universe models failed under scrutiny. Even multiverse theories, designed to sidestep the problem of a beginning, lack empirical support.

Clark doesn’t present the Big Bang as proof of God. Rather, he treats it as a critical piece of evidence, one that fits better with theism than with naturalism. In doing so, he uses the same abductive reasoning throughout the book to answer What is the best explanation for the evidence we see?

Given that the universe had a beginning and that all beginnings have a cause, it is perfectly reasonable to think that God might be that cause.
