The Strange Dreams That Inspired The Fentanyl Chronicles: Tales of Delirium from Intensive Care

Most people expect dreams to fade within minutes of waking. Tim Westall’s did not.

During a long and frightening stay in intensive care, Westall experienced a series of vivid, surreal dreams while receiving fentanyl for pain relief and sedation. Those episodes became the foundation of The Fentanyl Chronicles: Tales of Delirium from Intensive Care, a memoir that blends medical crisis, absurd humor, imagination and deeply personal reflection.

The result is a book that asks an intriguing question: what happens when the mind tries to make sense of fear, helplessness, memory and hope while the body is fighting to survive?

When Hospital Reality Became Dream Logic

Westall’s medical emergency began with a severe heart attack in 2024. His condition quickly became critical, leading to advanced life support and a lengthy period of intensive treatment. During this time, fentanyl was used to help control pain and keep him sedated.

That clinical reality became the background for something far stranger.

Westall recalls experiencing vivid dreams over roughly four to six weeks. They were not neat or logical. Instead, they involved impossible settings, familiar people appearing in unexpected roles, bizarre adventures and scenarios that felt completely believable while he was inside them.

Rather than dismissing those dreams as meaningless nonsense, he turned them into stories.

Vampires, Nightclubs, Flying Fish and More

Some of the chapter titles reveal just how unpredictable Westall’s dream world became.

Readers encounter “Isabel’s Nightclub,” “Karl the Vampire,” “Fentanyl Don Rides Again,” “Fishboy!,” “The Hamster Chronicles,” “Symony the Quitten” and “The Palace of Purrs.”

One dream transforms hospital experiences into a bizarre nightclub scene. Another turns anxieties around needles and blood into the story of a vampire-like figure. Elsewhere, Westall finds himself on international missions, creating businesses, organizing unlikely events, meeting unusual creatures and wandering through worlds where ordinary rules no longer apply.

The stories are grouped into four broad themes: “Nurses and Needles,” “Work and Life,” “Tales of Derring-Do” and “Cute Animals.”

That structure helps readers see that the apparent randomness often hides recurring concerns.

The Emotions Beneath the Absurdity

Many of the dreams are laugh-out-loud strange, but they also reflect serious emotions.

Westall’s fear of medical procedures appears repeatedly. His frustration at losing independence becomes dreams about movement, work, travel, achievement and escape. His longing for normal life appears through family meals, music, gardens, cars, pets and home.

To make sense of it all, Westall introduces Professor Pumpkin, a fictional feline dream analyst who offers humorous interpretations after many of the stories.

By the book’s conclusion, Professor Pumpkin identifies recurring themes including helping others succeed, resolving conflict and finding security in family, friends, home and animals.

Dreams That Became a Second-Chance Story

What begins as a collection of delirious adventures eventually becomes something more reflective.

Westall looks back on survival with renewed gratitude. He writes about appreciating everyday life, focusing on gradual progress, valuing close relationships and keeping work in perspective.

That is what gives The Fentanyl Chronicles its emotional weight.

The dreams may be strange, but the feelings underneath them are deeply familiar: fear, hope, love, frustration and the desire to return to the people and places that make life meaningful.
