If it wasn’t for the Ingstads who discovered the Norse site of Newfoundland in 1960, we would still be pondering as to whether the Sagas were but only works of fiction or trustworthy accounts of the Viking presence in the New World. Now a UNESCO site, L’Anse aux Meadows, called Straumsfjordr by the Norse, stands to the testimony of the Vikings’ Sea mastery. An exploit only surpassed by the Polynesian mariners of the South Pacific. In this well-illustrated book, Boutet explores the possibility that Viking explorers did venture from outside the confines of Newfoundland and that hints of their landings could be found all along the Eastern seaboard of North America. For this study, Boutet looked into the work of American and lesser-known Canadian researchers such as Bernard Assiniwi, Yvon H. Couture, Gérard Leduc, Napoléon Martin, Terry Deveau, and Farley Mowat, among others.
