Not everyone walks through the same trials in life. Some face conflict within their families. Others struggle with broken friendships, unmet expectations, or disagreements that seem impossible to resolve. Today, we also see an uncomfortable truth rising in our culture, such as people being canceled for what they believe, how they think, or even for a single mistake. Cancel culture has made it easy to silence others without conversation, forgiveness, or compassion. Sadly, many consider it normal.
Sometimes, we do not even realize we have “canceled” someone. Maybe we avoid them because we disagree. Maybe we will stop listening. Maybe we quietly close off communication without any explanation. And sometimes, the people who close the door on us are the very ones we love. If you have been cut off by a close friend or family member, you are not alone. The pain is real, and it leaves a mark.
I understand this personally. Someone I love deeply chose a path that I, and Scripture, disagree with. Our relationship broke under the weight of those differences, and communication stopped. The love remained, but the connection faded. It was a heartache I never expected, and it forced me to wrestle with what loving someone truly means when there is disagreement. But even in this, God taught me that disagreement does not erase compassion, and it does not cancel love.
Therefore, we should love one another and not only those who agree with us and who make choices we understand or approve of. Love one another, even when love hurts and when it means praying from a distance instead of standing close. I pray for that loved one every day, not so we can agree on everything, but so God will guide them into the peace that comes from His truth.
Jesus illustrated this kind of love in the parable of the lost sheep. A shepherd will leave ninety-nine sheep to search for the one that wandered away. He does not criticize the lost one. He does not punish it. He rejoices when he finds it. That is the picture of God’s heart. We may wander far into choices that pull us away from Him, but He continues to call our name.
God’s love is not limited by our mistakes or our past. He loves us in every condition: wounded, confused, angry, doubting, ashamed, or broken. He loves the person covered in tattoos, the person who has changed their appearance, the one in prison, the one battling addiction, the one who betrayed trust, and the one who quietly drifted away. He loves the person who feels canceled and forgotten.
Jesus did not come for people who thought they had everything under control. He came for the hurting, the lost, the frightened, and the ones carrying shame so heavy that they can barely breathe. He came for the ones who have been pushed aside, misunderstood, or abandoned. He came for those who cancel others and for those who have been canceled themselves.
Isaiah 1:18 offers a promise that shines with hope: “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” No rejection from others can erase God’s acceptance. No silence can quiet His voice calling your name. No mistake can make Him stop searching for you.
Jesus also extends a personal invitation to every weary and wounded heart: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) When others turn away, God moves closer. When others silence you, He listens. When others judge you, He extends forgiveness.
If you have been hurt by broken relationships or if you struggle to love someone whose choices you cannot support, take strength from knowing that God sees the pain you carry. He knows the longing to hold on to love without compromising your faith. And He gently reminds you that His love reaches farther than disagreement and deeper than rejection.
